Removing Carbon, Grease, and Gasket Residue from Heavy Equipment and Generators with Dry Ice Blasting

Wire wheels and scrapers gouge machined mating surfaces. Solvent tanks mean a full teardown. Here's how dry ice blasting strips carbon, grease, and old gasket material off engines and generator sets without damaging what's underneath.

Anyone who's scraped old gasket material off a mating surface knows the tradeoff: get aggressive enough to remove it fast, and you risk gouging the surface it has to seal against again. The same problem shows up cleaning carbon deposits off engine components and grease buildup off gensets — the tools that clean fast enough to be practical are often too hard on the metal underneath. Dry ice blasting sidesteps that tradeoff, which is exactly why it's become a standard tool for restoring heavy equipment and generators.

Where Wire Wheels and Scrapers Fall Short

Mechanical removal — wire wheels, scrapers, razor blades, grinding discs — works, but it's slow, labor-intensive, and it's abrasive on surfaces that were never meant to be abraded. A gasket surface that's been wire-wheeled a few times over its service life starts to lose the flatness it needs to seal properly. Carbon deposits inside a combustion chamber or on valve components can be scraped off, but there's real risk of scratching machined surfaces in the process — scratches that become new leak paths or wear points.

Where Solvent Tanks Fall Short

A solvent dip tank gets parts clean, but it requires full disassembly first — the part has to come off the machine and go into the tank. For a generator set or a piece of equipment that's still largely serviceable, that's a lot of teardown labor for a cleaning step. It also means the equipment is down for the full cycle: removal, soak, rinse, dry, reassembly.

What Dry Ice Blasting Solves for Engines and Generators

Because dry ice is soft — far softer than the cast iron, aluminum, and steel components it's cleaning — it strips carbon, grease, and old gasket residue without cutting into the base material. That means:

  • Machined and mating surfaces stay intact. No new scratches or gouges to affect a future gasket seal or bearing fit.
  • Cleaning happens in place. Engine blocks, cylinder heads, and genset components can often be cleaned without full disassembly, cutting labor hours out of a restoration.
  • No media trapped in ports, threads, or oil galleys. Sand or bead media left behind in an oil passage is a real contamination risk on reassembly. Sublimated CO₂ leaves nothing to find later.
  • No solvent to dispose of. The carbon and grease that come off are the only waste generated — no spent solvent drum to manage.

The equipment we see this used on most is exactly what you'd expect — engine blocks, generator enclosures and fuel tanks, molds, and anything with carbon buildup baked on by heat. The common thread is always the same: get it clean without damaging a surface that has to perform a mechanical function afterward.

Where This Leads Into a Repaint

Most of the time, cleaning heavy equipment isn't the end goal — it's the step before a repaint that actually protects what's underneath. A generator enclosure or engine component that's been degreased down to bare, contamination-free metal is a far better starting point for a coating system than one that's been wiped down and painted over existing grease. That's the same logic behind using dry ice blasting as surface prep more broadly — clean first, coat second, and don't seal contamination under a fresh finish.
