A coating is only as good as the surface underneath it, and more repaint failures trace back to inadequate surface prep than to bad paint. Grease, oil, and old release agents are some of the hardest contaminants to fully remove, because they don't always look like they're still there. Solvent degreasing can leave a thin chemical film behind, and if that surface gets primed before it's fully dry, you've sealed moisture and residue under a coating that's going to let go early. This is where dry ice blasting earns a real place in a prep sequence — with one honest caveat that matters.
What Dry Ice Blasting Actually Removes Before a Recoat
Dry ice blasting strips oil, grease, light rust bloom, carbon deposits, and old coating contamination without introducing any moisture or chemical residue of its own. Because the CO₂ pellets sublimate on impact, there's nothing left on the surface but what came off it — no rinse water to flash-rust bare steel, no solvent film to trap under a fresh primer. For equipment that's oily or greasy going into a repaint — generators, pumps, conveyors, machinery with years of lubricant overspray — that's a cleaner starting point than a solvent wipe-down usually delivers.
The Honest Caveat: It's Not an Abrasive Profile
Here's the part that doesn't get said enough: dry ice is soft. It cleans contamination off a surface, but it doesn't cut an anchor profile into bare steel the way sand, steel grit, or garnet media does. If a coating spec calls for a specific surface profile — SSPC-SP 6, SP 10, near-white or white metal blast — dry ice blasting isn't a substitute for abrasive blasting. It's a complement to it, or the right choice when there's no profile requirement to begin with.
Where It Fits in a Real Prep Sequence
In practice, dry ice blasting shows up in surface prep in a couple of specific ways:
- Pre-cleaning before abrasive blasting. Blasting oily or greasy steel with sand or grit just drives the contamination into the surface profile instead of removing it — media can't do both jobs at once. Degreasing with dry ice first means the abrasive blast that follows actually produces a clean, oil-free profile instead of contaminating it.
- Sole prep when adhesion is the only issue. If existing coating adhesion is sound and the only problem is surface contamination — no rust, no failing coating, no profile requirement — dry ice blasting alone can be enough to get a clean, dry surface ready for recoat.
We don't sell dry ice blasting as a replacement for abrasive blasting when a spec calls for a profile — that's not honest, and it's not how coatings actually fail or hold up. It's the right tool for getting oil and grease off a surface without adding moisture or residue back in. Sometimes that's the whole job. Sometimes it's step one before the blast pot shows up.
