High-Rise Exterior Michigan 2024

Crane-Assisted Sign Repaint on a 200-Foot Building

Large exterior signs on a 200-foot CMU building — stripped, prepped, and recoated using a crane to access surfaces no lift can reach. The kind of work most painting contractors won't take on.

Project Overview

This job called for repainting the large exterior signage on a 200-foot concrete masonry unit building. At that height, standard aerial lifts don't cut it — you need a crane to position painters at the work surface safely and efficiently. Endurance Painting handled the full scope: crane coordination, surface preparation, and a durable exterior coating system built to hold up against Michigan weather at altitude.

High-rise exterior work like this requires more planning than a standard repaint. The crane has to be positioned correctly, painters need to work in coordinated sections, and every pass of prep or paint has to be done right the first time — there's no easy fix when you're 200 feet off the ground.

The Work

The job ran crane-assisted from the start to the finish coat:

  • Crane setup and coordination for safe painter access at full building height
  • Surface preparation on the CMU sign panels — cleaning, removing loose and failing paint, and feathering edges
  • Primer coat on bare and repaired sections to ensure adhesion
  • Finish coat in the specified colors using a commercial exterior coating rated for CMU and masonry
  • Clean, tight lines on all sign lettering and borders throughout

Working at this height also means coordinating with the crane operator on timing — you work in sections, you don't rush, and you make sure every section is done before you move. The result has to look right from the ground, which means it needs to be clean and consistent up close too.

Results

The signs are sharp, the color is consistent across all panels, and the finish is built to last at that exposure level. Most painting contractors pass on jobs like this — the height, the crane requirement, and the coordination involved put them off. For Endurance Painting, it's the kind of work we're set up to handle.
